<p>The Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) trail runs 132 miles through the heart of Pennsylvania, from McKeesport, just outside of Pittsburgh, to Cumberland, MD. The AP trail connects to the 185 mile long Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) Canal Towpath which runs along the Potomac River from Cumberland, MD, to Washington, DC. Together, the GAP and C&O Canal add up to over 300 miles of trails. </p>
<p>We were invited to join nine of the ROMEO’s (Retired Old Men Enjoying the Outdoors) to cycle the GAP and C&O Canal the end of April 2010. This was a ride for hybrids and mountain bikes; definitely not skinny tire road bikes. The trail surface was a mix of hard packed dirt, crushed limestone, rocks, gravel, and a few miles of paved path. At times, we found ourselves dodging potholes, tree limbs, and low hanging branches. We even had to maneuver over and around a few downed trees. Including the miles we cycled to and from our lodging each day, we rode a total of 372 miles over 5 days.</p>

Thirteen different ride locations will be taking part in this annual tradition. This is a lively location so bring the smiles, cheers and laughter as you see your friends, meet new ones from the metroplex and have lunch together. Wear your club or cycling shop jersey and throw in the bike lock for security while eating. We look forward to seeing everyone on February 7th.</p>

<p>We began our cycling tour on a Sunday in Westerly, RI, with a group called Bike and the Like. Our tour hosts, Suzie and Roger Knable, welcomed us along with about 30 other cyclists. Our Welcome Dinner was at the Pleasant View Inn which was located on the beautiful Misquamicut Beach. We had rain showers all day long this day so everyone took the day off from our initial ride. Weather the remainder of the week couldn’t have been better. We had cool starts with it warming up in the early afternoon every day.</p>

<p>We are stunned. After passing SB 488 through both houses of the legislature with overwhelming bipartisan margins and responding to every legislator's concern with information or compromise, Governor Perry killed the bill today.</p>
<p>In spite of the huge number of phone calls in the span of two very intense hours, Governor Perry vetoed the Safe Passing bill, SB 488.</p>

<p>Cyclists in Suits Day at the State Capital in Austin - 2009</p>
<p>It’s that time again. The legislature is in session and we are headed to Austin to lobby our Representatives and Senators to pass the Safe Passing Bill. Basically, the Safe Passing Bill would require motorists to allow at least 3-feet of distance before overtaking and passing a cyclist as well as all types of vulnerable road users; i.e. pedestrian, wheelchair, tractor, etc. Thirty-one of us boarded the BikeDFW bus very early Monday morning, April 20th, 2009, for the trip to the capital. We arrived in Austin about 8:00am and met with a delegation from BikeTEXAS (formerly Texas Bicycle Coalition). Also meeting with us were cyclists from Austin, BikeHouston, LMRA Bicycle Club, San Antonio Wheelmen, and other clubs and businesses.</p>

<p>We thought we were going to cancel the ride but the rain left just as quick as it came. Paul, Doug, and Brian left the house about 2:30pm for a casual 20-mile ride. Temp was great but there was still a little wind. The rest of us gathered about 4:30 and dinner was served about 5:15pm. Thanks to everyone who was able to make it to the ride and get-together.</p>
<p>We'll have a family club ride Sunday afternoon at 2:00pm from Paul and Lynne Harris'. The ride will be about 20 miles and take in some of the hike and bike trails through the mid-cities and Grapevine and back on some back neighborhood roads. After the ride, the club will be serving a lasagna dinner.</p>
